That event, known as the “Boston Tea Party,” was a protest of the 1773 Tea Act, a bill enacted by the British parliament to try to save the faltering British East India Company by lowering its tea tax considerably.

they dumped the tea into the harbor because they wanted to show the British that they rather not have tea than to have tea and have to pay taxes for it.
