The Dawes Act was approved on February 8, 1887. Known as "An Act to Provide Allocation of Lands and Severalty to Indians on the Various Reservations", emphasizing the treatment of Indians as individuals and not as tribes. This act had a negative impact on the Indians, because it meant the end of possession of their common property, which belonged to entire families or clans. In exchange, they got reservations.
