In 2006, Pluto's classification was changed from one of the major planets of the Solar System to a dwarf planet. This is in part because other bodies were discovered orbiting the Sun that are as large as or larger than Pluto, but smaller than the other major planets. One of these is called Eris. There is also an asteroid or dwarf planet, called Ceres, about the size of Pluto, orbiting the Sun between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.
