A family eats at a restaurant that is having a 15% discount promotion. THeir meal cost $78.65, and they leave a 20% tip. If the tip applies to the cost of the meal before the discount, what is the total price?

The total price would come out to $393.25

Since the price is before the discount the 15% will not be used in solving the equation at all. So you do part/ whole = percent/100 (the percent being the tip). Since you are looking for the total, the original price will be your part. You then multiply 78.65 x 100 then divide by the percentage (20) to get your answer.
