Once the Bolsheviks took control of Russia in 1917, they established a peace with the Central Powers (the alliance made up mainly of Germany, the Austria-Hungarian Empire, and the Ottoman Empire), who they had previously been at war with, and began to fight against both the Allied Powers (USA, Britain, France) and hostile internal elements within Russia.
