One major reason the Renaissance began in Italy is linked to geography. The city-states of Italy, positioned on the Mediterranean Sea, were centers for trade and commerce, the first port of call for both goods and new ideas.

Northern Italy was the perfect place for the Renaissance to begin because those cities were already centers for trade and commerce between Europe with other continents such as Asia. Also, with the fall of Constantinople, many intellectuals that used to live there moved to Italy. So those cities were full of people from all over the world and with people that had great work. These cities were centers of trade concentrated many merchants that patronized arts and science there.
