Oral packing is an important post-operative thing after throat surgery. While recovering from anesthesia, the patient’s gag reflex may not be present. If vomiting or bleeding in the throat occur, liquids may enter the airways and cause contamination or aspiration, more importantly. Oral packing also prevents blood from entering the stomach, where it may go undetected or cause false findings. Be ready and prepared for symptoms like dysphagia, postoperative sore throat and difficulty breathing.
