How did ancient civilizations use a stick in the ground to find the direction north?

1 The shadow of the stick points north when the sun rises in the morning.
2 The shadow of the stick points north at approximately noon.
3 The shadow of the stick points north when the shadow is the longest.
4 The shadow of the stick points north when the sun sets in the evening.

i beleive it is 3 because 1 would not be it because the sun rises in the east not north. its not 2 because the sun is straight up in the sky so therefore there would be no shadow. And it cant be 4 because the sun sets in the west.
