Starting, Stopping, and Making Protein. In any mRNA molecule, one codon always marks the beginning of a protein. That "start" codon is usually AUG in both eukaryotes and prokaryotes, although eukaryotes use GUG on rare occasions. AUG codes for the amino acid methionine.
