Democracy rests upon an informed electorate and (semi-)honest, accountable leaders. If the leaders are corrupt, then it becomes increasingly more difficult for the public to discern the good from the bad political leaders. If the people can't tell them apart, the people will generally distrust their leaders and that lack of faith leads to instability or discontent.
