The answer is -17, because its a negative so it's below zero. So, adding 17 (positive number) will bring it towards zero instead of farther down. -17 is the answer, because if you used -16 it'll pass zero, ending at 1.

Hi.
If a number and it's opposite are added, the sum will always be 0.
