48 1/2 - (10 1/4 + 24 1/8) =
48 1/2 - (10 2/8 + 24 1/8) =
48 1/2 - 34 3/8 =
48 4/8 - 34 3/8 =
14 1/8 <=== so he is left with 14 1/8 inches of crown molding
