How to solve:

3+3(-4a - 5) = -108

u would first expand the brackets.
3*-4a and 3*-5
now it looks like:
3-12a-15=-108
3-15=-12
-12-12a=-108
shift over the-12 by adding 12 on both sides
-12a=-96
divide by-12
a=8
