The process of metamorphism refers to the change in the chemical composition of a rock due to the effect of increasing heat and temperature, and also because of the presence of chemically active fluid.

All the three types of rocks such as igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rock can undergo the process of metamorphism, forming a new metamorphic rock. For example, the sedimentary rock Shale changes into a metamorphic rock Slate due to the increase in its pressure, temperature condition.

All types of metamorphic rocks are formed due to the increasing heat and pressure condition. For example, Schist, Gneiss and Quartzite.
