It would be harmed by chemicals in the environment if the protective covering was destroyed.
The protective covering in bacterial cell is responsible to protect the bacteria from environmental threat when they're operating inside an organism's body.
Antibiotics that we took to protect us from disease are designed to eliminate these protective coverings.
