Kate has run 7 miles this month. Kate would like to graph the line that represents the total number of miles she will have run, M, after d days, given that she will run 3.5 miles each day. She would like the graph to show the number of miles run for the next 2 weeks. Select from the drop-down menus to correctly complete each statement. To best show this information, the scale for the M-axis of her graph should go from 0 to at least , and the d-axis of her graph should go from 0 to at least .

Solution:

Total distance ran by Kate in a month = 7 miles

Distance that Kate runs in a day = 3.5 miles

Total Distance that Kate will cover in 2 Weeks = 3.5 × 14= 49 miles

Total Distance traveled by Kate = 49 + 7 = 56 miles

As total number of miles traveled is represented by M, which is covered in d Days.

M = 3.5 d , which is equation of line passing through the origin i.e d ∈(0,14], M ∈(0, 49]

If we consider , the Distance covered by Kate in previous month, then,

Equation of line will be : M = 3.5 d + 7

To show the above information , the scale for the M-axis of her graph should go from 0 to at least 49 , and the d-axis of her graph should go from 0 to at least 14 days .
