Why did the reconstruction era bring about unprecedented levels of political terror and violence ?

Reconstruction era ushered in a new system by attempting to change the inequity of racial, slavery, political, social, national, and economic legacy of the US. Since the change is not favorable by many, political terror and violence wrecked the US land after the events of Civil War.
