Systems that can store and discharge carbon are known as carbon pools. There are several processes to transform the carbon to change pools. One of them is combustion. When hydrocarbons and biomass are burned, it converts the carbon chemically bound in the biosphere to carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Example:

C3H8 + 5o2 → 3Co2 + 4H2o + heat.
