It led to the creation of the Republican party. This was the party that was opposed to the northward expansion of slavery, and ran candidates that made this a major part of their platform. This was a follow-up to the Whig party, which had tried to run a more measured platform that was pro-slavery in the election prior and caused their extinction as mass numbers of their voters decided to sit out rather than vote.
