China had established a state that was behind the large-scale use of ocean trading. In addition, the rise of the Muslim religion and the advances that the religion brought in trade and thought increased commerce. Technology moved forward in this time period, also, with the advent of larger ships that were more readily capable of carrying larger loads for transport and trade.
