Solution using an equation:

cost = fixed fee + fee per mile

cost = $24
fixed fee = $6
fee per mile = 3x for x miles

24 = 6 + 3x

6 + 3x = 24

3x = 18

x = 6

Answer: Mike traveled 6 miles.

Solution without equation:

He spent $24.

$6 is for the initial fee, so he spent $24 - $6 = $18 on the miles.

$18/($3/mile) = 6 miles

Answer: Mike traveled 6 miles.

Hello! To solve this problem, we can write and solve an equation. Set it up like this:

6 + 3m = 24

This is because 6 is the one-time fixed price and you pay $3 per mile. Subtract 6 from both sides in order to get 3m = 18. Now, divide each side by 3 to isolate the “m”. 18/3 is 6. There. m = 6. Mike traveled 6 miles by taxi.
