D) Spain

This question is a bit odd, because Christopher Colombus, an explorer sailing for Spain, discovered the West Indies, and by extension the New World, in 1492. To suggest that he arrived with three small boats and immediately took control of the region is a bit silly, although Spain did quickly establish a significant presence in the area.
