There were high taxes that most if not all common folk struggled to pay. Also the Boston Tea Party and the Townsend act (which priced heavy taxes on the colonists for things that they needed.)

The stamp act through 1765-1766 was when a tax was introduced on legal documents to pay for any type of defense.
