Thurgood Marshall
Marshall was a civil-rights attorney, called by many "Mr. Civil Rights". As head of the NAACP, he won many important cases that fought for African American civil rights involving issues such as discriminatory housing practices, voting rights and racial segregation in public schools. The passage provided is referring to the Brown v. Board of Education case (1954), which is also one of Marshall's greatest victories as the Supreme Court finally abolished the racial segregation in the United States.
