3 and 1/3 is equal to 10/3 because a whole number would be 3/3 and we have 3 whole numbers plus 1/3

1.

3 1/3 is the same as 3 + 1/3.

3 + 1/3 =

Write 3 as a fraction.

= 3/1 + 1/3

You need 3/1 to have a denominator of 3, so you get

= 9/3 + 1/3

= 10/3

10/3 is the same as 3 1/3.
10 divided by 3 = 3 reminder 1, so 10/3 = 3 1/3

2.

6 8/9 = 6 + 8/9 =

= 6/1 + 8/9

= 54/9 + 8/9 = 62/9

3.

5 1/4 = 5 + 1/4 =

= 5/1 + 1/4

= 20/4 + 1/4

= 21/4

4.

7 2/3 = 7 + 2/3 =

= 7/1 + 2/3

= 21/3 + 2/3

= 23/3

5.

9 3/5 = 9 + 3/5 =

= 9/1 + 3/5

= 45/5 + 3/5

= 48/5

Now that I showed you 5 times how to change a mixed numeral into an improper fraction by adding the whole number part and the fraction part, I will show you a shortcut.

Example 1.
Change 5 1/4 into a mixed numeral.

Multiply the whole number, 5, by the denominator and add the numerator.
5 * 4 + 1 = 20 + 1 = 21
Then set this number over the denomiator, 21/4

5 1/4 = 21/4

Example 2.
Change 7 2/3 into an improper fraction.

7 * 3 + 2 = 21 + 2 = 23
Write 23 over the denominator, 3.

7 2/3 = 23/3
