Why did ponyboy fool around instead of shooting when hunting with his father?

Ponyboy does not shoot when he went hunting with his father because he thought of the animals’ feelings. In the book, “The Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton, Ponyboy is a greaser who is very smart. He is also the most emotional among his brothers.
