passage:
(1) The interior decorator took one look at our striped couch and shook his head.
(2) “Did you get that in a prison?” he asked. (3) His caustic comments didn’t seem to affect Mom. (4) She thought he was brilliant.
(5) “I know that the couch is lumpy, unsupportive, and the fabric is badly frayed,” Mom said apologetically. (6) “Tell me, Franz. (7) What kind of couch do you envision in this space?”
(8) Franz closed his eyes tightly and placed his palms around his face. (9) His forehead became so strained that he looked like he was lifting a 200-pound weight instead of just thinking.
(10) “I see it now,” he said without cracking open his eyelids. (11) “Your new couch will be either dark red leather or it will be silver suede. (12) It will have three cushions, an asymmetrical back rest, and 2-inch high arm rests.”
(13) “Oh, Franz. (14) That sounds amazing!” Mom gushed. (15) “You have such a good eye for truly modern design. (16) What do you think about the art on my walls?”
(17) Franz crinkled his nose like he smelled rotten eggs. (18) His judgmental gaze swept across the needlework and quilted wall hangings that covered our beige walls.
(19) “First we must give the walls more character,” Franz said. (20) “Bright green should do it. (21) Also, you must be careful about what you hang on your walls. (22) You can hang a movie poster in the living room, a bulletin board in the dining room, and a string of Christmas lights in the master bedroom.”
(23) What has Mom gotten us into? I thought as I gaped at Franz.
