Extinction. In classical conditioning extinction happens when a conditioned stimulus is presented without an unconditioned stimulus, resulting in the eventual end to the conditioned response. In this case the dog was conditioned to salivate when the refrigerator door opened. When the refrigerator door was repeatedly opened without the presentation of food, the dog's salivation response became extinct.
