The europeans were able to open sea routes to continue trading with africa and asia, even after the silk road went into decline. These ocean routes brought nonperishable (and some perishable) goods to europe via ship, which caused there to be an increase in jobs for sailors, thus bolstering the local economy in multiple ways.
