Aunt Alexandra is Atticus's sister and, in spite of her obvious racism, he knows she cares about Scout and Jem. Aunt Alexandra wants to assist and help and he doesn't want to shut her out of his life that is what he is telling in the first sentence while in the second sentence, “calling the summer a hot one” this is making reference to the trial that is about to take place.
