Compulsions are maintained by negative reinforcement since it takes away the anxiety brought about by the intrusive thoughts and unwanted obsessions; negative reinforcement because you are reducing a certain behavior (in this case anxiety) by adding something (compulsion). In return, the compulsions are maintained in a cycle.
