Kendall found two worms in the yard and measured them with a ruler. One worm was 9 2/3

inches long. The other worm was 7 inches long. How much longer was the longer worm?

step 1

Find the difference between the two numbers

so

9 2/3 -7

step 2

Convert mixed number to an improper fraction

so

9 2/3=9+2/3=29/3

step 3

substitute in the original expression

29/3 -7

Multiply 7 by (3/3)

7(3/3)=21/3

therefore

29/3-21/3=8/3

Convert to mixed number

8/3=6/3+2/3=2 2/3

the answer is

2 2/3 in
