Before 1974, Texas governors served two-year terms, with most being elected to a maximum of two consecutive two-year terms. In 1972, Texas voters adopted a constitutional amendment changing the governor's term to four years; in 1974, Dolph Briscoe was the first governor elected to a four-year term of office.
