They also started the Medici banks. Giovanni Medici became the leader of the Florence city state in 1434, the Medicis ruled Florence till 1737.

They patronised arts and paid commissions for the creation of major works of art. Their patronage allowed the artists to focus on the work without worrying about money. Most of the architecture and art produced in Florence during the Renaissance was because of the patronage of the Medicis. They supported Masaccio, Brunelleschi, Michelangelo, Raphael, Donatello and Leonardo da Vinci.
