A piece of carpet is 8 feet wide and 12 feet long. The carpet needs to be reduced by a scale factor so that the reduced carpet is 2 feet wide. What is the area of the reduced carpet

Hi there.

So, we've got the dimensions.

l = 12, w = 8

We know that the width has been divided by 4. That means we also divide the length by 4. This gives us the new dimensions of:

l = 3, w = 2

A = lw

3 · 2 = 6 ft²

Cheers~

6 feet because 8 / 12 reduces to 2 / 3 and you multiply 2 times 3
