write the ratio from strawberries to melons

3\colon4

according to this means that for every 4 cups of melons Valerie should add 3 cups of strawberries

write 14 as a product of 4

\begin{gathered} 14=12+2 \\ 14=(3\cdot4)+2 \end{gathered}

From this we can see that she used 3 whole 4 cups of melons for which she is going to require 9 cups of strawberries, she also used 2 additional cups of melons for which she will need 1.5 additional cups.

9+1.5=10.5\text{cups}

check if answer is correct

\begin{gathered} 3\colon4=(3)/(4)=0.75 \\ 10.5\colon14=(10.5)/(14)=0.75 \end{gathered}

She will need 10 cups and a half cups of strawberries.
