Sickle cell anemia is a disease in which the oxygen carrying capacity of the red blood cells is reduced. The RBC change its shape and becomes sickle shapes which reduces its surface area and its carrying capacity also decreases.

Sickle cell anemia is an autosomal recessive pattern, which states that both the copies of gene in the cell have mutation in them.

Both the parents carry one copy of the mutated gene and so not show any signs or symptoms but when the zygote is formed it is affected by this disease.
