a^(2) is just a*a, and
a^(4) is a*a*a*a

Thus, adding them together is a*a a*a*a*a, or
a^(6)

Alternatively, use the rule

a^(m) +a^(n) =a^(m+n)

When used in this problem:

a^(2) +a^(4) =a^(2+4) = a^(6)

I hope this helps!
