The answer is A. They were independent cites that ruled land around their area. They weren't countries per say, but they were somewhat similar to countries.

Answer:

The correct answer is A. Greek city-states were independent cities with authority over nearby regions.

Step-by-step explanation:

The Greek state cities were called polis, and they emerged in the Dark Age through a process of aggregation of nuclei and population groups called synecism. The unification between the urban nucleus and its rural environment, an essential characteristic of the archaic and classical polis, had already been completed by the second half of the seventh century BC. The polis was the essential framework where Greek civilization developed and expanded until the Hellenistic era and Roman domination.

The structure of the polis entailed an urban establishment generally installed at the foot of an elevated citadel along with a rustic part, composed of land owned by private citizens, uncultivated fields, and forests. The polis included the walled city, the fields of cultivation and grazing, and the ports that communicated with the outside. Each polis controlled its territory, in which it was considered self-sufficient, considering as a supreme ideal independence and non-submission to any external power, which did not prevent the formation of different types of alliances between polis.

The large geographical compartmentalization, both in continental Greece and in the islands, produced that the average size of the polis was reduced: a population of no more than ten thousand inhabitants, on an area between one thousand and three thousand square kilometers.
