v^2 +3v - 4 = 0
(v - 1)(v + 4) = 0
v - 1 = 0; v = 1
v + 4 = 0; v = -4
answer
v = -4; v = 1

v^2 + 3v - 4 = 0 can be factored: (v+4)(v-1) = 0. Then v = -4 and v = 1.
