Why would curved or rounded lines of latitude make it difficult for sailors to accurately draw straight-line compass courses on maps?

The compass courses could not be plotted with accuracy. This made it difficult for navigation, because the maps were distorted. It was difficult to pinpoint a certain location when the lines were not accurate. This made it difficult to know exactly how far away the destination was.
