You can eliminate them since they cancel out.

In a ratio, you compare numbers by dividing them.

For example, if the ratio is 4 cm to 5 cm, then you can write


(4~cm)/(5~cm)

Now divide the numerator and denominator by cm.

You get:


(4)/(5)

As you can see, the same units cancel out.
