These plants tend to have larger and broader leaves. This is because they need to capture as much of the filtered sunlight as possible to continue photosynthesis. The trees in the canopy and the layers below it take up much of the light that could reach the forest floor, so these base-level plants have to use what little light they receive in a more efficient manner.
