If a pair of organisms are capable of producing fertile offspring in nature, they must belong to the same species.

Species is a group of organisms (plants or animals) that have closely similar appearance and in which any two organisms of the suitable sexes can exchange genes (interbreed) and produce fertile offspring, usually by sexual reproduction. For example, all species of the genus Canis have the ability to interbreed and produce fertile offspring.
