If y equals -12 when x equals 9 find y when x equals negative 4

Simply set up an equation or rather a proportion:

y/x

-12 / 9 = y / -4

Now, cross multiply:

(-12)(-4) = (9)(y)
48 = 9y
y = 48/9 or 5 8/9 or 5.33
