The original purpose of the Constitutional Convention was to amend the Articles of Confederation. However the founders decided to forgo that plan because they felt the Articles of Confederation were already too broken to fix. So instead they went past their original plans and instead created a new Constitution that was meant to alleviate all the problems caused under the articles.
