The hot, humid weather made the work exhausting.
Many died during the construction of the Panama Canal due to the hot, humid conditions in which the work took place. This environment also carried great risk of disease, specifically insect borne diseases. Cause of death included dysentery, dehydration, fever, and exhaustion.
