Why is the literature of exploration filled with so many journals, letters, and other nonfiction sources

Exploration as in the literature of someone going in an adventure... because there must be evidence for that exploration to be perceived true. The more the physical matter that comes from the exploration/ expedition, the more true it is regarded.
