It rejected traditional social restraints and things that they considered sensual or materialistic. They also rejected the idea of miraculous inspiration. However, self-discipline and civic responsibility were accepted. Transcendentalism helped people with personal improvements and helped them think about spiritual awareness and self-discipline.
