First, you multiply the denominator by the whole number. Next, you add the product to the numerator; the total will be your numerator to the improper fraction. Then, put the total sum/numerator over or on top of the denominator. This will give you your equivalent, improper fraction.
Ex.
2 2/5
5×2=10
10+2=12
Put 12 over/on top of 5
=12/5
12/5 is the equivalent improper fraction of 2 2/5

ex 1 3/2

2 x 1 +3 5
------------ = ----- = 2.5
2 2

first denominator times whatever the whole number is then add that to the nominator than you have an improper fraction

because 3/2 = 1.5 then plus the whole number which is 1.0 = 2.5
